There are two ways to vote: 1) in person and 2) by mail.

Voting in Person

> Vote in person at your local voting polling place. The poles are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

> The address of your polling place is on the back of the sample ballot that registered voters receive in the mail. (See sample here.)

If you don’t have a sample ballot, call your county Registrar of Voters/Elections Office for the address. You can also look the polling place and sample ballot up at www.smartvoter.org. Just type in your address and zip code.

> If you are a first-time voter, bring your driver’s license or other identification. You may be asked to show it.

> If your name is not on the voter list, you can still vote with a “provisional” ballot. If you would like to verify that you are registered and that your vote was counted, call your county Registrar of Voters/Election Office. The Registrar of Voters will determine if you are registered and notify you if your vote was counted or not.

Voting by mail (Absentee Ballot)

Anyone can vote by mail.

Apply for an absentee ballot in one of 3 ways:

1) Register absentee when you fill out your voter registration form. (Click here for information on how to register.)

2) Request an absentee ballot application from your county Registrar of Voters/ Elections Office. (Click here for a list of County Elections Offices).

3) Use the absentee ballot application form on the back of the sample ballot that you get in the mail.

For inmates of county jails, absentee may be the only way to vote. If you will be in jail on election day, you have the right to request an absentee ballot application. On the application, use your last residence as your home address and the address of the jail as the mailing address where you will receive your absentee ballot.

> The deadline for sending in your absentee ballot application is seven days before election day. If possible, mail in your application one to two months before the election to make sure you get your absentee ballot.

How to Fill out the Ballot

> After you have marked your absentee ballot, you must sign the back of the return envelope in order for the absentee ballot to be valid. You can mail in the ballot or take it to any polling place on election day.

> Marked ballots must be received (not postmarked) by 8:00 PM on Election Day.
